In the harbour area, a free area of more than 100,000 m2 is available for commercial use.

In 2001, the Port of Frederikshavn, one of the largest traffic ports in Denmark, changed its organization from a state harbour to a municipal and self-governing harbour; in 2005 the organizational structure was once again changed into a public limited company, owned by “Frederikshavn Kommune” (the Municipality of Frederikshavn).

In the summer of 2003, the municipality initiated a review of the plans for the Port.

In the process the following rule has governed the planning:
 
The Port of Frederikshavn shall remain an active commercial port, with no possibility of planning or building houses.

With the establishment of several maritime service companies in the harbour areas, the character of the Port of Frederikshavn is gradually changing from a commercial area with a majority of heavy industrial production companies into an area with many service and business companies. At the same time there is a growing trend towards many types of service companies wanting to place themselves in the attractively situated harbour areas.

In 2005  the General Plan for the Port of Frederikshavn was published. Upon request, the municipality will be pleased to send you the plan (Danish only).
