Wind Power – Project cargo in the Port of Frederikshavn

“SCA Transforest” RORO-carriers on the North Sweden-Rotterdam/Tilbury run has in July ´10 called 3 times at the Port of Frederikshavn to load Windmills and a further 7 calls during September and October are planned for the transport of a total of 15 windmills for installation in northern Sweden– each windmill is packed on 8 to 9 special trailers, that are loaded complete with tractorheads over the vessels ramp. This way the units can be driven directly of the vessel and on to the construction site upon arrival in north Sweden .

Sweden has some of the best wind conditions in the world, the costs have decreased and the expansion has finally caught wind", says Johan Ihrfelt, CEO of wind energy company O2.

During 2009, 198 new wind turbines were installed in Sweden. This brings the total number to 1,359 wind turbines. The Swedish government is planning for a tenfold increase in wind power by 2020, but it’s up to local municipalities to drive this development.

The electricity harnessed from wind energy during 2009 amounted to 2,5 TWh, an increase of nearly 26 percent compared to 2008.  Despite this, wind energy only contributed about 2 percent to total power consumption – something the government plans to increase to 20 percent by 2020 ( 30 TWh).

This will require the erection of a further 3,000 to 5,000 windmills.

The swedish authorities wish that the heavy transport of the windmill-parts should not travel to far over the roads, in order to minimize the wear and tear caused by the transport. Consequently the projects should be carried by sea to the port closest to the final destination of the mill.

As it is likely that a fair number of these mills are to be delivered by either Vestas, Siemens or other danish manufacturers, the Port Authorities will work for more mills being shipped from the Port o Frederikshavn.
