Port of Frederikshavn embarks on the future

Frederikshavn Havn A/S’ Board has decided to initiate a strategic development project aiming at an extension of the port.

The decision entails that a request for tender will be announced with the purpose of extending the present port area significantly.

”Our goal is to become the leading maritime service, environment & recycling centre in Northern Europe / Scandinavia. Our geographical location right at the crossroads of the North Sea and the Baltic is just perfect”, CEO Preben Reinholt states.

The port extension will entail a wider range of business opportunities for the port and its maritime business community.

The port extension will provide facilities and permit service overhauls and reconditioning of larger vessels and offshore platforms. 12 major maritime service providers situated at the port evaluate that a port extension will generate an increased turnover of up to DKK 600 mill. and create 300-400 new jobs, according to a survey conducted by Frederikshavn Havn A/S earlier this year.

An extension of the port will not only generate new business opportunities  for the maritime service industry. Representatives from the conventional port operations as well as the environmental & recycling industries also evaluate promising growth opportunities within these focus areas, according to the survey.

Facts about the port extension in Frederikshavn

The plans include an extension of the port entry from the present width of 93 m to 135 m and an increase of the water depth from the present 8 m to 12+ m. The expansion will be made by means of an extension into the sea east of the present port area and will include a significant increase of the port’s land and water areas as well as new infrastructure.

Increased environmental requirements generate new business opportunities

During the next 10 years new and stricter international requirements to harmful emissions to water and air from shipping (e.g.  MARPOL Annex VI) will come into force. Consequently, many vessels need to be environmentally improved/retrofitted. The extension of the port facilities in Frederikshavn, the  geographical position as well as the competences of the maritime service cluster in Frederikshavn provide a good basis for Frederikshavn Port as the preferred service partner in the future – the green service centre of Northern Europe / Scandinavia.

Port extension is part of ambitious 5-year strategy

The port extension decision is part of Frederikshavn Havn A/S’ 5-year growth strategy published in Autumn 2010. The overall goals are to increase the freight quantities and the turnover by 50% by 2016, attract new customer segments, generate new jobs and maintain the port’s natural position as Northern Jutland’s leading port.

Frederikshavn Havn A/S’ growth strategy is built on 4 strategic focus areas:

•       Tourism & ferry traffic

•       Conventional port operations

•       Environment & recycling industry

•       The maritime service industry cluster
